Northwest Iowa Dairy Outlooks

Crop insurance adjusters are in the area and reporting potential yields of 1-4 bushels per acre. Even substainial rains would not help much of this crop. Several fields are being cut for hay. While some producers will dust in cotton hoping for rain, most are taking a “lets see the rain first” approach.

For the 18 key wheat states, only 36% of the acres are rated Good or Excellent.That compares to 37% last week and 65% last year. At the other end, 36% of acres are rated as Poor or Very Poor. That compares to 32%last week and only 6% one year ago. As we alluded to on Friday, the big problems are in the southern plains. 66% of Texas’s wheat acresare rated poor or very poor as are 60% of Oklahoma wheat acres, 37% of Kansas acres and 57% of Colorado acres. Those states ranked2nd, 3rd, 1st and 5th, respectively, in winter wheat production and hard winter wheat accounted for 42% of total U.S. wheat production in2010.
