Northwest Iowa Dairy Outlooks

A local discussion of current science and issues concerning dairying in northwest iowa

Counties in the Rolling Plains experienced near
record heat over the last couple of weeks with some areas reporting four
straight 112 degree days. Cattle producers are reporting poor range conditions
and short hay supply. Some ranchers are weighing options of selling off or
buying feed/hay while others are already supplementing cattle with range cubes
weekly along with hay. Stock tanks are getting lower every week.  Hardeman County reports that cotton producers
have abandoned all dryland cotton in the county and about 25% of the irrigated
cotton has been abandoned. Irrigated cotton is losing yield potential quickly
with zero acres being reported as excellent. Many irrigated cotton producers
are seeing wells drying up. Peanut producers are seeing the same thing.  Farmers are attempting to prep acreage for
upcoming wheat sowing. Grass fires are beginning to plague Palo Pinto County
again. Pecan crop is heavy and it’s questionable if nuts will fill with the dry
conditions. Peach harvest is winding down.
