August 20, 2012 New Mexico Fines Slaughter Plant
The New Mexico Environment Department has issued a compliance order to Valley Meat Co., alleging that the meat processor known for its support of horse slaughtering did not properly dispose of solid waste.
The department has fined the Roswell, N.M.-based company $86,400 for the way it handled hundreds of tons of composted offal from cattle, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
The company has said that it plans to appeal the order.
Earlier this year the company was the first to apply for federal inspection of a horse-meat-for-export operation since the ban was lifted in 2007.
