September 10, 2012 We Still Need Rain
Some counties have received some much needed rain. However, more is still needed. Dryland cotton is not doing very well but the irrigated cotton is making good progress. The cooler night temperatures have been welcomed. Peanut producers are getting harvesting on their minds and should begin in the next couple of weeks. Producers are seeing average crops in most fields. Pecan tree nutlets are reaching maturity, crops looks to be pretty light this year with the dry conditions most of the growing season. However, rainfall would help with kernel filling. Pecan weevil pressure has increased, recommended backyard trees be sprayed. Range and pasture conditions continue to improve but slowly in most areas. Pasture and rangeland has begun to green up, however vegetation is still short due to the drought and overgrazing for the past two years. Cattle are reported to be in fair condition.
