Northwest Iowa Dairy Outlooks

A local discussion of current science and issues concerning dairying in northwest iowa

The 2013 Wichita County Junior Livestock Show starts today at the Bridwell Agricultural Center here in Wichita Falls.

This year’s show schedule starts with the broiler show at 4 p.m. on Thursday, followed by the turkey and rabbit shows.

On Friday, judging resumes with the market steer and breeding heifer shows at 9 a.m. followed at 11 a.m. with the breeding and market lamb shows. At 2 p.m. the breeding swine show begins followed by the market swine show.

On Saturday the goat show begins at 8 a.m. and at 11 a.m. the attraction in the arena will be the horse show. Finally, the pinnacle of the show season for many of the exhibitors is the annual premium auction at 7 p.m.

One of the highlights for the community is the premium sale on Saturday night. At the sale, business owners, family friends and many proud grandparents step up and support these young people with cash bids. While it is an entertaining evening, it is also the basis of a college education for many of these young citizens. If you have not been asked to support this year’s premium sale, consider the request made and call me to discuss the details.
