Local Pecan Producers Earn Top Honors At Regional Pecan Show

On Saturday, December 13, 2014, Williamson County hosted the Central Texas Region II pecan show. From over 150 samples from 12 counties in the competition, Williamson County growers brought home 13 first place ribbons plus grand champion honors in two divisions. These winners will go on to competition in the state show in July.

Williamson County entries earning first place honors included:

From the Classic and New Division:

Bruce Johns, Taylor with his Apache entry that had 47.25 nuts per pound and 56.25 percent kernel.

Darwin R. Karkoska, Granger with his Brake entry that had 45.82 nuts per pound and 59.6 percent kernel.

David Phillips, Georgetown with his Imperial entry that had 31.50 nuts per pound and 57.64 percent kernel and his Podsednik entry that had 28 nuts per pound and 52.47 percent kernel.

Ann Singleton, Jarrell with her Success entry that had 40.14 nuts per pound and 51.33 percent kernel.

Ray Ponton, Taylor with his variety seedling that had 58.91 nuts per pound and 58.44 percent kernel plus was named division grand champion.

From the Commercial Division:

Robert Kaderka, Taylor with his Cheyenne entry that had 46.76 nuts per pound and 54.64 percent kernel.

Darwin R. Karkoska, Granger with his Choctaw entry that had 38.12 nuts per pound and 59.66 percent kernel and his Kiowa entry that had 38.44 nuts per pound and 56.78 percent kernel.

John Doerfler, Weir with his Desirable that had 37.49 nuts per pound and 50.41 percent kernel and his Sioux entry that had 59.68 nuts per pound and 61.11 percent kernel plus his Wichita entry that had 45.36 nuts per pound and 61 percent kernel and was recognized as division grand champion.

Robert Kaderka, Taylor with is Nacono entry that had 37.8 nuts per pound and 51.67 percent kernel.
