Beef cattle production has certainly faced its fair share of challenges over the last five years with drought, feed costs and prices and input costs. Now that we have received a little rain over a wide area in central Texas and cattle prices are the best that they have ever been, we face new challenges.

Topics for this year’s program will include Dr. Jason Johnson, Extension Economist from Stephenville discussing heifer retention numbers, price prediction for 2015 and discuss consideration in buying cows or keeping replacement heifers. Dr. Jason Cleere, Extension Beef Cattle Specialist, College Station, will discuss heifer selection and address several hot topics in the beef industry. Dr. Larry Redmon, Extension Forage Specialist, College Station, will discuss the value of round bales (weight, protein, stored inside or outside, age of hay) and provide several forage production topics that everyone could use. Cattle theft and agricultural property theft is always of concern as cattle prices are good at this time. Hal Dumas, Ranger with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Assoc. will provide tips on how to protect your farm and ranch assets. The Farm Services Agency will have a representative at the meeting to discuss the Farm Bill and what it will mean to Bbeef cattle producers.
