Northwest Iowa Dairy Outlooks

A local discussion of current science and issues concerning dairying in northwest iowa

Seventeen attendees, including 4-Hers, FFA members and parents attended the first program in the Road To Greatness Series sponsored by the 4-H Livestock Committee on Saturday, April 9. The Steer and Heifer Clinic focused on what new exhibitors need to know about a calf project.

Todd Vineyard spoke on selecting a project animal- what to look for and what often leads to a winning animal.

Dr. Kelly Warner spoke about animal health and gave tips on how to tell when a project animal needs to see a veterinary.

The final speaker was Gina Bagby with Purina Feeds. She helped the new exhibitors understand basic nutritrion and the stages that calves go through when the nutritional needs of the animal change.

The noon meal was sponsored by Sure Coat Solutions. The hosts for the day were Tony and Lynae Austin and the Patton family, owners of the Maverick Cattle Show Barn in Fort Worth.

The series will also feature programs on Sheep and goats, swine, rabbits and poultry in the upcoming months.
