Unconventional grazing systems typically involve an unusual management effort, an unusual kind or class of livestock, multi-species grazing and more often a combination of these three. “This is often the hall-mark of small farms in the urban area around Fort Worth and that makes this program a great fit for local folks” says new Tarrant County AgriLife Extension Agent Fred M. Hall.

The Texas Wheat Producers Board (TWPB) is holding its biennial election to elect five board members to fill expiring positions.  The mail election officially begins March 23, 2013 and will conclude April 9, 2013.

Terms expiring in 2013 include Cagle Kendrick of District I, Tommy Womack of District II, Fred Dwyer of District III, Ken Davis of District IV, and Jack Norman also of District IV.

With changes in market opportunities, weather, and rainfall, local farmers are exploring opportunities to reduce risk through crop diversification. The Central Texas Small Grain and Canola Field Day scheduled for Wednesday, April 22 at the Stiles Research Farm in Thrall will provide an in-depth study of bareley, canola and wheat. Sign-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the presentations at 9 a.m. The program will include lunch and three pesticide applicator continuing education units.

The Stiles Farm is located at 5700 Farm-to-Market Road 1063, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 79, 1 mile east of Thrall.

Cost is $10 with registration starting at 7:45 a.m. Presentations and tours begin at 8:30 a.m.
